Privacy Statement in connection with Huawei UK Challenge

This notice explains how the organiser of the competition, Huawei Technologies R&D (UK) Ltd of  Unit 302, Cambridge Science Park, Milton Road, Cambridge, CB4 0WG (the ‘Organiser’) may use the personal information you disclose to it (or where a team enters the competition, its representative discloses to it) during participation in the competition.

For the purposes of data protection legislation, the Organiser will be the controller of the personal information collated by it. Your personal data generally will be treated in accordance with our Privacy Policy accessible at https://www.huawei.com/uk/privacy-policy. However, the personal data collated specifically in connection with the competition will be dealt with, in particular, as set out below.

1. The data we collect

The Organiser may collect the following types of personal information about you:

  • Contact details: This information allows us to identify and contact you directly such as your name, address email address, telephone number and address.
  • Identification information: if you are a winner of a trip to Huawei headquarters in China, we may need your passport and visa details to organise your trip.
  • Personal information: This information includes the university you are studying at, what you are studying and your educational background. If you are a prize winner of a trip to Huawei headquarters in China, this may also include details such as your dietary requirements and next of kin details (needed in the event of an emergency).

2. Sources we collect your personal information from

We will collect personal information from a number of sources. These may include the following:

  • Directly from you: when you register to enter our competition or communicate with us directly in some other way.
  • The Evaluation System: when you register on that system, we are given access to the personal data you disclose there.

If you are providing information regarding other individuals to us:

  • it is your responsibility to ensure that you have the right to provide the information to us; and
  • they have a right to know and to be aware of what personal information we hold about them, how we collect it and how we use and may share that information. Please share this privacy notice with them.

3. What we use your personal information for

The table below describes the main purposes for which we process your personal information, the categories of your information involved and our lawful basis for being able to do this. Which will apply will depend upon your interactions with us and whether you are a prize winner.

  • If you do not provide us with the requested personal information we may not be able to properly administer the competition and therefore consider your entry into the competition or award a prize to you.
  • Where you have given the Organiser your consent to use your personal information in a particular manner (e.g. for publicity purposes in connection with being a winner of the competition) you have the right to withdraw this consent at any time, which you may do by contacting the Organiser as described in the “Contacting us” section below. Please note however that the withdrawal of your consent will not affect any use of the information made before you withdrew your consent and the Organiser may still be entitled to hold and process the relevant personal information to the extent that it is entitled to do so, on bases other than your consent.
  • Who your personal information is shared with

4.1 The Organiser may share personal information with the following parties:

  • Other companies in its group: where you are a prize winner and the Organiser has to organise any element of a prize that involves a group company’s assistance (e.g. sending of a smart phone or organising a trip to Huawei headquarters in China).
  • Marketing and public relations companies: to help the Organiser to develop, carry out and assess our competition or associated promotional campaigns.

4.2 Where you enter the competition and sign up to the Evaluation System the operators of the Evaluation System share the personal data you input into the system with the Organiser (e.g. your user name and competition submission). Please note that although the Organiser treats the information that it accesses via that system in accordance with this privacy statement, the operator of that system treats the personal data you disclose to it, via the Evaluation System, in accordance with their Privacy Policy and Terms of Use available at https://github.com/codalab/codalab-competitions/wiki/Privacy. Please read these carefully because by registering with the Evaluation System, you are agreeing to its terms.

  • Transferring your personal information internationally

5.1 The personal information the Organiser collects about you is not transferred to or stored in countries outside of the UK or European Union except as set out in this clause.

5.2 If you are a prize winner of a trip to Huawei headquarters, then the Organiser will transfer your personal data to some of its group companies in order to organise the trip. If your personal data is so disclosed then the Organiser will impose any legally required protections to the personal information as required by law before it is disclosed.

  • How long is the personal information kept for

6.1 The Organiser will keep your personal information for a period of one year after the competition closes. Please note that if you are a winner, then any materials created as part of the promotional campaign in connection with the competition, may be available after this period.

7. Your rights

You may exercise your rights of access, rectification, cancellation, limitation and opposition and other rights in accordance with our Privacy Policy accessible at https://www.huawei.com/uk/privacy-policy, through the address of our Data Protection Officer at dpo@huawei.com.
